INFORMATION
The Millennium Dome Museum (TMDM) is a museum dedicated to the commemoration of the Millennium Dome, a large-dome shaped structure once located in the Greenwich area of South-East London from the period of 31 Dec 1999 until 31 Dec 2000. Famed for hosting the Millennium Experience, the Dome served as a symbolic monument for Britain entering the third millennia and attracted over 6.5 million visitors during its one-year run, becoming the most popular UK tourist attraction of 2000. However, the project was deemed a financial failure by many - the costs of both building and hosting the Millennium Experience were much higher than initially  anticipated, with the Dome requiring over £600m of National Lottery grants to fund itself compared to its original £399m budget, and a further £1m per month after its closure to structurally maintain. It would later become the 02 Arena, a popular sport and live music venue within the UK.

Us here at the TMDM, however, choose to see the Dome in a more positive light. With a simple, sleek design, the Dome’s optimistic yellow spires encourage us to reflect on a time of economic hope and security, before the 2008 looming financial crisis and the COVID pandemic. By looking backwards, we can also look forward in the hope of finding that same peace ag
ain.

The Millennium Dome Museum is a safe space for all. Regardless of your opinions on the financial effectiveness of the Millennium Dome, we encourage you to avoid using phrases such as ‘waste of money’ and encourage more open, less intense language such as ‘somewhat pecuilar use of the National Lottery fund’. If you’re interested in supporting the museum, feel free to volunteer or better yet, donate any Millennium Dome memorabilia you may have lying around your attic.
